Frequently Asked Questions

Where is my data stored?

On your own computer, in a local database. Personal Finance has no cloud account and no sync service, so your balances, transactions, and holdings are never sent to us.

Do I have to connect my bank accounts?

No. Connections are optional. You can enter every account by hand, or connect institutions through Plaid to retrieve balances, holdings, and transaction history automatically. Connections are read-only and cannot move money.

What do I need to connect accounts?

Your own Plaid API keys (and, optionally, RentCast keys for estimated home values). A first-run guide walks you through getting them. Because they’re your keys, data flows from those services directly to your computer, and their pricing applies to your own account with them.

What happens if I forget my password?

When you create your profile you receive a 24-word recovery phrase. It’s the only way to reset your password, because the keys protecting your connections are never stored anywhere we could reach. Keep it somewhere safe.

Can I back up or move my data?

Yes. You can export everything as an AES-256-encrypted backup protected by a password you choose, and import it on another computer. You can also delete a profile and all of its data at any time.

Does Personal Finance give financial advice?

No. It shows you facts and patterns, and runs what-if projections on assumptions you supply. It never recommends buying, selling, or rebalancing, and it isn’t a substitute for a licensed professional.
